Cannes Film Festival Fever

The glamour and glitz of Tinseltown hit the French Riviera this week as the 61st Cannes Film Festival began.
The next 12 days will be full of A-listers, wannabes and executives schmoozing, posing and partying at the film industry’s most famous and prestigious event. There will also be a good deal of serious film viewing and reviewing.
This year’s festival is showcasing South American film and promises something for everyone, from dark independent European tales and quirky animation to good old-fashioned blockbusting Hollywood adventure.
Over 33,000 industry professionals will be in Cannes to see 22 movies fight it out for the coveted Palme d’Or for best film which is awarded on the final day, 25 May. Other awards in the motion picture competition include the Grand Prix, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actress and Best Actor.
The main competition opens with Brazilian entry Blindness, directed by Fernando Meirelles who also directed City of God. It stars Julianne Moore and Gael Garcia Bernal caught up in a global blindness epidemic.
More big names in the feature film competition include Angelina Jolie in Clint Eastwood’s Changeling, Benicio del Toro in Steven Soderbergh’s Che, Gwyneth Paltrow and Joaquin Phoenix in James Gray’s Two Lovers and Philip Seymour Hoffman in Charlie Kaufman’s Synecdoche, New York.
Matteo Garrone, Paolo Sorrentino and Ari Folman are some of the less mainstream directors competing for the big awards.
There are also competition prizes for new talent (Un Certain Regard), film school entries (Cinefondation) and short films. In addition, the festival features special screenings and out of competition showings.
This year the return of the well-preserved Harrison Ford as archaeologist-adventurer Indiana Jones is grabbing the headlines in the latter category. The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is directed, as ever, by Steven Spielberg. Jack Black, Woody Allen and Robert de Niro are all involved in Out of Competition films too.
Madonna, Diego Maradona and Mike Tyson are just a few of the celebrities expected to strut their stuff on the Croisette, Cannes’ main thoroughfare, during the next two weeks.
Britain is represented at the festival by first-time director Steve McQueen who opens the Un Certain Regard competition with his portrayal of the last six weeks in the life of Bobby Sands. The IRA hunger striker died in 1981 after 66 days without food. The short film category features a film made by English artist Sam Taylor-Wood and executive-produced by the late Anthony Minghella.
The juries for each competition category include international film actors, directors, writers, technicians, critics and journalists depending on the award. This year’s feature film jury is led by American actor-director Sean Penn and includes US actress Natalie Portman and Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron.
Last year Cristian Mungiu won the feature film Palme d’Or with 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days.
The Cannes Film Festival may be a private, invitation-only affair but even we mere mortals can enjoy the unique atmosphere of the resort. EasyJet flies to Nice from London and most regional airports. UK travellers based in the North can fly from Manchester with Air France and KLM.

If you are a movie fan, you know that movies are rated before they are released to the public, in order to better inform viewers of the content of the film.
Movies were not always rated, however, which meant that their content was universally restricted in order to make it appropriate for all audiences. This also meant that the subject matter that could be dealt with within the context of a film was very restricted, and that directors had to find ways to deal with objectionable subject matter in creative, non objectionable ways.
Movies that are released today receive a rating from the Motion Picture Association of America, based on a system of criteria adopted in 1968. Before this time, there were no G, PG, PG13, R or other ratings designations in place.
A Universal code of screen content, the Hays code, adopted in 1930, stated, among other things that movies were not to portray drug trafficking, excessive kissing or seduction. The code, put into place because of the rapid transition at the time from silent films to longer movies involving dialogue and more involved plot lines, also forbade the glorification of murder, adultery, and childbirth.
This code remained in effect until the 1960s, when changing societal attitudes necessitated the move to a rating system that allowed certain things that had been previously forbidden, but restricted who could watch them, namely children. Although the Hays code was just that, a code, very few filmmakers took the chance of producing movies that violated the codes standards, since this would have doomed their films to obscurity.
The original movie ratings system developed in 1968 included G, M, R, and X for general, mature, restricted, and no one under 17 admitted, respectively. PG replaced M in 1970, and the R rating was modified to restrict admission to persons under 17 unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. In 1984, director
Steven Spielberg requested that the PG 13 rating be added, after parents of preteens raised concerns that some of his films, like Gremlins and Indiana Jones, were too scary to be rated PG.
In 1990, the ratings system was modified again, and the X rating was changed to NC 17 to indicate a movie that was non pornographic but still unsuitable for persons under 17. When people go to the movies nowadays, they use these ratings guidelines as a way to know what to expect when it comes to making the best entertainment choices possible.

If you are someone who wants to become a filmmaker, film school should be a place of joy for you. Because it not only equips you with the basic film making skills, but it also serves to shape your passion. Besides, it gives you the thrust and direction to produce your own film with new and fresh ideas.

There are several well reputed film schools in the country. Well, if California is always going to boast of highest number of film schools, followed closely by New York, you still have lot of other film schools in rest of the country.

Let us first talk about the most sought after “Top of the Pie” film schools which are dream of every aspiring filmmaker. The foremost would be the AFI. It was established in 1967 and is known for speciality in traditional narrative films. It offers six areas of study to the students — Screenwriting, Directing, Production Design, Production and Editing.

Next in line is the California Institute for the Arts which was established in 1961 by Walt Disney for focus on animations. Then there is the San Francisco State University, also set up in the sixty’s. The then prevalent political landscape has greatly influenced its course content. Now move on to UCLA and USC. Enter New York and you find Columbia University School of Arts and the New York University. Both schools have long list of film writers and directors who owe their training to them. For instance, Spike Lee reminds me of New York University.

It appears that if you wish an entry into the “golden gates” of any of these symbols of academic fame, you are going to need the of grace of God and his miracle making powers! So, better start praying right from now. And if despite your best efforts (and prayers!) you fail to make your proud entry inside any of the heavenly gates, no need to despair. Rather than staring at the blissful faces in there, turn around and you will find a lot of other film schools across the country with good programs.

There are several film schools in the Pacific Northwest. There is a very good film school in the University of Washington. Another interesting option is the Evergreen State University. It is famous (or infamous!) for its kind of liberal style of education. In place of grades, they have a system where both students and teachers evaluate every thing — themselves as we as the program. They are known as Greeners and they take pride in their critical thinking. Their program, known as MediaWorks, has produced severel radical and cutting edge filmmakers.

You will have to consider a few things before you pick a film school. The first thing is the cost of education. This is the ground reality, because if you are going to take loan for your education, you must consider how soon you will be able to repay it after finishing school. To answer this question, consider the kind of internships they offer. You can learn about it from past students who recently graduated from the schools you are considering.

Film school is the confortable launching pad for your rocket of burning aspirations. It provides you the opportunity to put your hands on all types of equipments and facilities required for film making. For instance, you will learn how use a camera, recording devices, editing equipments, sound studios and edit bays. Another unique aspect of filmschool is the pool of talent — other students. Students crew for each other. You have all this while you are at school. Once you are out, you can only envy what you had at the school.

So, whichever film school you choose to attend, try to enjoy it fully. It is a place where you have freedom to experiment and facilities to work out your projects. Rather than thinking of sleep at night, plan on falling in love with pizza and Top Ramen.
