BOPP and BOPP Film Testing

BOPP testing is very important for BOPP quality control. BOPP(Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene) cigarette film, with is excellent moisture barrier property, optical performances, heat seal property as well as high heat seal strength, reasonable shrinkage rate and good stiffness, is the first choice for cigarette film. The testing items of BOPP are the judgment for BOOP film performance. In order to better control the quality of BOPP cigarette film, Labthink, integrates the testing demand and introduces the relevant BOPP cigarette film testing methods and items, so as to bring useful helps for the cigarette companies.

A. Moisture Barrier Property Testing of BOPP Cigarette Film

High moisture barrier property performance is a must for cigarette package so as to avoid deterioration caused by moisture. At present, this factor is not fully noticed by the cigarette manufacturers. Labthink PARAM TSY-T1H is developed according to ASTM E96, ISO 2528 and other standards to test moisture transmission rate for materials. The lower WVTR the better. But, higher barrier property means more costs. Therefore, the common data is less than 10g/m2.day or 5g/m2.day.

B. Thickness of BOPP

Thickness of BOPP cigarette film is the basic film performance index. Uneven thickness would influence the tensile strength and permeability as well as the following procedures. Thicker cigarette film would have better stiffness with better visual performance. But, the cost would also be great. In order to find the balanced solution, high precision thickness tester is needed. Labthink PARAM CHY-C2 is the lab thickness tester with the precision up to 0.1um. When testing thickness in different directions, deviation must be controlled within 3% usually. Meanwhile, the edge thickness of BOPP film has to be measured.

C. BOPP Cigarette Film Tensile Strength, Elongation and Elastic Modulus

Cigarette package requires high tensile strength of BOPP films, which can greatly reduce the breakage during packaging process. Generally, 140N/mm2 vertically and 200N/mm2 crosswise are required. Elongation rate is for analysis of incision easiness of films. Cigarette packaging industry is different from other industries. Higher elongation rate is not better. Max. limitations of 200% vertically and 80% crosswise can guarantee easy incision and assembling smoothness. Other industries require those two indexes. But cigarette package requires more detailed requirements on incision easiness during high speed production. Therefore, Elastic Modulus testing is also put forward. Labthink PARAM XLW(PC) Auto Tensile Tester is the professional tester for film and its tensile strength with Elastic Modulus testing. Low Elastic Modulus would lead to worse stiffness, unsuccessful production procedure and inferior incision easiness as well as package breakage and film obstruction.

Commonly, Elastic Modulus is required to be above 2000N/mm2 for cigarette film. However, when testing Elastic Modulus, testing conditions and temperature must be emphasized. Otherwise, the results will fluctuate greatly. Therefore, testing condition must be stated.

D. The Heat Seal Strength of BOPP Cigarette Film

BOPP is required to have high heat seal strength and wider heat seal scope by the cigarette industry, so as to improve packing speed and proper operation. If the heat seal temperature is higher, it would lead to wrinkle because of increased BOPP film shrinkage. Therefore, proper heat seal temperature should be chosen so as to avoid unstable heat seal, wrinkle and other phenomena. The heat seal style of BOPP cigarette film is heat-pressure seal, that is, to heat seal at certain heat seal temperature, pressure and period. The heat seal testing is to test the minimum heat seal separating force after heat sealing. It is widely applied in the cigarette industry that Labthink PARAM HST-H3 Heat Seal Tester and PARAM XLW (PC) Auto Tensile Tester are used together. The heat seal strength of cigarette is normally required to be above 2.0N/15mm. Now, with the development of cigarette packing machine, low temperature heat seal film becomes more popular, which requires the heat seal strength above 1.5N/15mm.

E. BOPP Cigarette Film Coefficient of Friction Testing

The smoothness of BOPP cigarette film is one important index for BOPP films with is the testing requirements coming along with the high speed packing.

There are four kinds of situations that need coefficient of friction testing, namely, the coefficient of friction of the film and the metal side of the machine or the transfer belt; the inside side between films; the film inner side and the cigarette outer package; and the outer film side and the outer package. Of these four coefficients of friction, the first should be low so as to better transfer the cigarette package and improve packing speed.

The inside coefficient of friction should be a bit higher than that of the outer film and the machine metal side for precise location of film and cigarette package so as to improve heat seal quality and packing effects. The coefficient of film and outer paper box should be low for smooth insertion of cigarette packages. The testing speed is 100mm/min, or 150mm/min in US Standard. Labthink PARAM MXD-02 Coefficient of Friction Tester complies with many standards including US standards and international standards, and gets wide applications. Since the reference for cigarette film coefficient of friction varies, e.g., metal panel, cigarette box, inner and outer sides of films, etc., the coefficient of friction is normally between 0.2-0.6.

F. The Heat Shrinkage Testing for BOPP Cigarette Film

BOPP film heat shrinkage is mainly used for the evaluation of heat stability under different conditions or different factors. For rigid cigarette package, such rigid package has good support effect, around which high shrinkage film can be applied so as to achieve even and beautiful visual effects. Therefore, rigid package requires the heat shrinkage of BOPP cigarette film to be up to 8% to 12%.

But, deformation cause by high shrinkage rate is a problem for ordinary flexible cigarette package. Generally, the shrinkage rate is controlled within 3%-7%. For heat shrinkage testing of BOPP cigarette film, ASTM D 2732, or GB/T 13519 is applied. Take Labthink PARAM RSY-R2 Film Free Shrink Tester as an example; mark the vertical and crosswise lines on the specimen with clear indication of direction. Put the specimen in between the frame, and immediately emerge into 120±2C constant temperature medium for 20 seconds. Then, emerge the specimen into the prepared normal temperature bath for 5 seconds, and take it out. Lay horizontally and measure the vertical and crosswise size within 30 minutes. The measurement should be with accuracy up to 1 mm. At present, some companies heats 1 minute, 5 minutes or other conditions under 120C with different testing results.

G. BOPP Cigarette Film Abrasion Resistance Testing

With stricter requirements for abrasion resistance, inferior abrasion resistance performance would greatly influence the beauty of the cigarette package. The testing of abrasion resistance is to avoid scratch on the surface of the product caused by the contact of film surface and the machine; and to avoid wounds caused by film and outer package. Labthink PARAM MCJ-01A Rub Tester can be applied for the test. Take a piece of clean offset paper of 50mm width and 80g/m2 onto the rub tester. Cut a piece of BOPP cigarette of certain size and put on the rub platform. Set the rub times and start to see the abrasion.

Above all, there are many BOPP cigarette film testing items. When testing, relevant standards must be applied; or unified testing conditions for data comparison. Labthink, is willing to have further dialogues on BOPP film and its quality with professionals of the industry.

There’s many things that make a good movie and there’s a lot more that make a great movie. One of the deal breakers between a movie going from good to great or falling away from good to a waste of the audiences time is the ending.
Sometimes it feels like the writer just ran out of ideas or had gotten the film’s plot so convoluted that when he realises the run time has breached the two hour point the ending is suddenly cobbled together and rushed through.
Perhaps the worst possible end to a film, and indeed any story, is for the main character to suddenly wake up and find it was all a dream. So we sat there and got involved in a story for nothing? What was the writer trying to say?
There’s other cardinal sins in ending films: losing the big game or fight (Tin Cup); after a film-long build up the bad guy goes down ridiculously easily (Rocky 3); the whole thing is resolved by something completely outside of the story line so far (Raiders of the Lost Ark); the writer doesn’t know how to explain things clearly (Revolver) and leaves the plot so confused that numerous viewings still leave you thinking “what?!!”
I’m not going to look to heavily here at those films which are obvious set-ups for the sequel as I still hold these as a waste of time – films that are franchises rather than installments in a series a-la Godfather.
One of the real irritants in a bad movie is when the character receives absolutely zero pay off for the struggle they’ve been through in the previous two hours of film.
Castaway, with Tom Hanks, is a prime example. We, the audience, spend the majority of the film watching Tom Hanks struggle to live on an island, losing weight, growing a questionable beard, developing an eerie relationship with a volleyball and desperately struggling to get back home to his loved ones and, specifically, his wife. When he does make it home he finds everyone has given him up for dead and his wife has married and had a child. So what does Tom Hanks’ character do? What is our payoff for watching this story? It’s Tom Hanks staring at a truck going down a road and smiling. Well that was worth all that struggle. Good have been a good film but ruined by one of the biggest let downs in cinema.
A great film can also be demoted to a mere good film by a let-down of an ending. Take The Sixth Sense. A child psychologist, Bruce Willis, trying to help an annoying little kid who can see dead people. The director, M. Night Shyamalan, masterfully builds up suspense throughout this film as the psychologist encourages the kid to help the dead people. Parodied many times but a pretty good film bordering on the great, until the ending where we find out that Bruce Willis’ character is dead.
Bit of a let down and a poor twist – how had anyone not wondered why he was wearing the same outfit throughout the film? Oh, and the kids mum finally believes the kid can see dead people.
As a small point, Shyamalan is one of the biggest perpetrators of bad endings on pretty good films. Signs, for example, masterfully built up and then the aliens turn out to be allergic to water. I haven’t even seen Unbreakable simply because so many people have told me how bad the ending is.
Some bad endings are so bad they can kill an entire trilogy. Godfather 3, for example, nearly killed the trilogy just by it’s mere existence. A hugely and overly convoluted plot bought shuddering to a series of questionable scenes finalised with Michael (set sometime in the future from the plot) sitting in a chair in an Italian garden, he puts on his sunglasses then dies, a dog sniffs him and the screen fades. Great way to end what had been once billed as the greatest saga.
Speaking of great sagas, there’s the end (or endings) of the Lord Of the Rings trilogy. What could have been a huge film in terms of battle, resolution and final feel good factor is ruined by not knowing when to end. Something like a dozen endings follow the films logical conclusion point (Frodo waking up and being greeted by all the survivors) one of which seems to be there only as an attempt to quash the questioned homosexual relationship between Frodo and Sam, thus ruining a film which could have been the best of the trilogy.
So, for all those budding screen writers and the film makers that keep committing cardinal sins when wrapping up films, here are some tips.
Don’t rush the end but know when to leave it alone – we don’t want to know what the character did for the rest of their life just the end of the story you’re telling us. Don’t make it too confusing, if you can’t explain it clearly don’t attempt to be clever – for every The Usual Suspects there’s a Revolver.
Don’t make your main character to something completely against grain and nature just to wrap things up or attempt a twist – “oh he turned out to be evil” is not a twist.
Give the audience a payoff, they’ve spent upwards of two hours on an uncomfortable chair watching this story they don’t want to see someone merely shrug the events off as an attempt at a symbolic gesture and try not to kill your lead too easily if you must kill them at all.
Look at Pulp Fiction: John Travolta’s character gets killed ridiculously easily halfway through the film but thanks to some clever sequencing, is still alive when the credits role as the films money-rollers knew that’s what the audience wants to see. Nobody wants to spend the films duration relating to and liking a character only for them to get hit by a car at the end and die.
I’m not saying all films end badly, there are many, many great endings that make a film even greater.
My own personal favourite ending is Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid. A great film with a great ending. The characters don’t suddenly change, they don’t die on screen. They may well die but we don’t see it. They remain true to their friendship and attitude, deciding they can shoot their way out not knowing that while they’ve been planning the entire Bolivian army has gathered outside to await them with a hail of gunfire. We don’t see that though, what we see is our film’s hero’s bursting out smiling and then held in position as the credits end.
When you roll those credits, do it well.

It doesn’t take very long when you visit friends and see some really cool entertainment center layouts that you begin to daydream about how you want your perfect home entertainment arrangement to look.  Sometimes it is just a matter of taking the many little ideas of the perfect components of what you want in your entertainment room and putting it all together into a great unified space that will be that perfect entertainment space in your home.

Along with the electronics that you will need, what you pick as your entertainment center furniture will go a long way to set the mood and create a flow for your family and guests.  And picking the right furniture for this important part of your home is as much an art as it is a science because what you choose fits so closely with how you see your time with family and friends going each time you gather to enjoy a night of great entertainment in that room.

Naturally, you will probably look for only the best in entertainment center electronics so that whether you gather with friends to enjoy the Superbowl or are spending a night with a sweetheart enjoying romantic music, your equipment always is top notch.  But what makes up the best of stereo, television and other entertainment electronics is also a personal decision.  If you feel that the room will mostly be about watching sports and movies, that will call for a different layout than a room devoted to dancing and the finest music.

Similarly, the arrangement of your entertainment center furniture is as much a factor to how much your guests enjoy your home as the furniture itself.  If you will be enjoying times of playing cards and other organized activities, then you want plenty of open space for people to move around as well as quality game tables that will make that kind of social activity easy and natural.  But if you envision a room for enjoying the big game, relaxed chairs and couches may be just the thing.

With these ideas in mind, the best approach to entertainment center design is not to start from the equipment you want and build out from there.  Instead, start with the kind of gatherings you expect to have and design the room around what will make those events the most successful.  Also take into consideration the needs and priorities of your family and guests.  While for you, a good big screen TV may be plenty to watch the game of the week, you might also need to think of how your kids might use the room to preview the latest CD of their favorite pop star with their friends.

By thinking of the needs of everybody who will use the room, you will be able to get just the right equipment as well as the right entertainment center furniture that will make those gatherings a success.  It will be just as gratifying to you to see your family and their friends enjoy this space as much as you and your friends do.  And that can happen if you make “people first” in the design of this important room in your house.  If that is your approach, not only will the entertainment room get a lot of use, it will be a place where dozens of great memories will be made as well.  And that will make all of your planning for the perfect layout well worth the investment.

Hip Operation
This band is somewhat of a phenomenon the North of England. They continue to play the most prestigious venues and parties around.
The band formed around seven years ago. Experienced bandleader Steve Dolder collected some old friends and some new to creating an exiting high-energy live band delivering the best in live music you will have heard. The line up had to include a brass section, but not a bunch of old timers, instead some younger guys who had the ability to dance and play simultaneously, a rare feat today. He then recruited a singer not unlike the great Paul Carrack to front the band and with the voice and attitude to match it was a great appointment. He then had to lure a guitarist away form his studio, having spent twelve years in Los Angeles Chris Roe was ready to work. The combination of these six people produces a great feel good effect which becomes infectious amongst any audience both young or old. They have played over 1000 gigs as this line up, some large corporate events, Christmas Party residencies to smaller intimate weddings and gatherings. As entertainment goes it gets no better.
The band always presents itself well, they are fully self contained with intelligent lighting and a mighty KV2 Audio PA system. Kv2 are rapidly becoming one of the most sort after sound reinforcement systems in the world.
So with a voice like Paul Carrack a fully mobile brass section with all the moves and driving rhythm section this entertains full on.
Hip Operation have been asked to provide live music for the very prestigious Hilton Hotel Gateshead Christmas season.  After 2 successful and enjoyable years at St james Park we are delighted to except the engagement. The band has been working hard on new material which is beginning to pay dividends as the workload for 2009 has increased dramatically.
Due to the recognition in this field of live music and entertainment the demand has become apparent for the band now offer a new range of services.  The band can augment its line up to a 14 piece band producing a night of swing music which is proving exceptionally popular at both weddings and charity events and private parties. This appeals to those possessing deeper pockets! The band also now provide musical packages for your wedding or event including string quartets, jazz duos, solo singers, solo musicians, harpists and DJ’s the list goes on…. they have become a one-stop shop for the regions entertainment requirements.
It is well worth visiting www.hipoperation.co.uk to see how this North East phenomenon works and continues to break new ground
